Actor Lance Reddick Dies at 60

According to his publicist, actor Lance Reddick passed away on Friday at the age of 60. He was a familiar face to moviegoers thanks to his supporting roles in the “John Wick” films and his imposing performance of a straightforward police chief on “The Wire,” a critically acclaimed television drama. According to a statement that was released by Reddick’s publicist, Mia Hansen, Lance Reddick passed away unexpectedly on Friday morning due to natural causes. There was an initial lack of disclosure of any additional information regarding the circumstances surrounding his passing.

According to the celebrity news website TMZ.com, which cited sources within the law enforcement community, the performer was discovered dead at his residence in the Studio City neighborhood of Los Angeles at approximately 9:30 in the morning.

His passing occurred just a few days before the scheduled release on March 24 of the fourth film in the “John Wick” franchise. In that film, Reddick reprised his part as a hotel manager named Charon, an ally of the main protagonist, a professional assassin forced out of retirement, played by Keanu Reeves. His death occurred just days before the scheduled release.

On the HBO crime thriller “The Wire,” which was filmed in Lance Reddick’s hometown of Baltimore and served as his first major screen role, he played the character of police chief Cedric Daniels. The show, which began airing in 2002 and ran for a total of five seasons, was hailed as one of the best dramas ever produced for television due to the realistic portrayal of urban struggle that it offered from the points of view of the police, the narcotics dealers, and the people who were caught in the middle of them all.

Lance Reddick later performed a similar character as a big-city police chief on the Los Angeles-based cop drama “Bosch,” which is a show from the streaming site Amazon Prime. He is tall, has a shaved head, and has a talent for portraying low-key yet imposing authority figures.

In addition to his performance in “John Wick,” he has appeared in several motion pictures, including the thrillers “Angel Has Fallen,” “Monster Party,” and A “Godzilla vs. Kong” movie. Popular among video game fans thanks to his voice work as Commander Zavala in the “Destiny” brand shooting game franchise.

Lance Reddick is a classically trained pianist who studied music at the Peabody Preparatory Institute, worked in the summer music theory and composition program at the Walden School, and eventually graduated with a bachelor’s degree in classical composition from the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester.

In 2007, he came out with a jazz album under the title “Contemplations and Remembrances.”

A photograph of Lance Reddick that was uploaded to his Instagram account the day before he passed away showed the actor sporting a broad smile while he was encircled by his four canine companions while sitting on a sofa in his living room.

On Twitter, Lance Reddick’s fellow actor and co-star on “The Wire,” Wendell Pierce, paid tribute to his friend and colleague, calling him a “guy of enormous strength and grace” and the “epitome of class.”

Lance Reddick is survived by his spouse, Stephanie, whom he wed in 2011, as well as the couple’s son and daughter.
