Kim Kardashian wore a pearl-covered gown to the Met Gala to honor Karl Lagerfeld, a fellow fashion designer who appreciated the gem.

Kim Kardashian attended the event on Monday night decked up in a Schiaparelli Haute Couture creation by Daniel Roseberry. The dress, which contained more than 50,000 freshwater pearls and 16,000 crystals, was fashioned around a corset of blush satin. Schiaparelli claimed that the outfit required a team of 12 people over a thousand hours to make since each pearl strand had to be individually strung and wrapped around the model’s torso. Kardashian completed her ensemble with a choker, pearl drop earrings, a long train, and ruffled sleeves.
On the red carpet, Kim Kardashian gave an interview with Vogue’s special correspondent Derek Blasberg, in which she discussed the creative process that went into creating her couture gown. “I wanted to feel glamorous,” she remarked, adding that she didn’t need to produce a major work this time. My sisters and I took a shot before we came.
To coincide with the opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibition—which this year is dedicated to Karl Lagerfeld—the Met Gala serves as the museum’s annual fundraising gala. The collection, which includes over 150 items (including sketches) and is entitled “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” is dedicated to the memory of the late designer, who passed away on February 19, 2019.
The invitation states only “In honor of Karl,” but that was all Kim Kardashian needed to inspire her outfit choice for this year: I was craving pearls. Karl, what’s the latest? The Chanel pearls immediately came to mind. We aimed for a gilded look.

Kim Kardashian was soaking with sweat. As she walked from the Ritz hotel to the car to the carpet, she disclosed that some of the legitimate pearls were falling off the ensemble. North West, who accompanied her famous mother to the event, “was putting them all in her purse,” Kim Kardashian revealed. To which Blasberg said, “I am going to follow you around all night, too.”
Pun-lover Blasberg asked Kim Kardashian if she had met Karl Lagerfeld’s favorite cat Choupette and joked that she was “the most pearl-fact guest” at this year’s Met Gala. Kardashian said it was “a little scary at first” but that she warmed up to him after they spent some time together.
Following this, Kardashian visited her best friend La La Anthony, who was manning the Vogue live stream, telling her that “it’s super emotional” to be there because of the family’s history with Lagerfeld. She went on to say that Lagerfeld had shot her very first fashion assignment and that he had cast Kendall Jenner in his runway shows when she first began out as a model. “It’s very special,” she said.
Kim Kardashian’s presence at the Met Gala is always a highlight. She donned the beaded Jean Louis illusion gown that Marilyn Monroe wore to sing “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy at Madison Square Garden on May 19, 1962, and it turned heads. (It made headlines because of Ripley’s Believe It or Not! loaned the dress.) In 2021, she dressed head to toe in a black Balenciaga ensemble.
In addition to that, she has donned a sheer Roberto Cavalli gown with a feather train from 2015, a dress with off-the-shoulder straps designed by Vivienne Westwood Couture from 2017, and a dress made of chainmail by Versace from 2018., and a custom Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci gown from 2013 when she was pregnant. Her 2019 Thierry Mugler dress was the famous designer’s first new creation in two decades.
Penélope Cruz, Michaela Coel, Roger Federer, Dua Lipa, and Anna Wintour of Vogue are listed as the evening’s co-chairs in the Met Gala program.
