Leonardo DiCaprio’s breakup: Criticism about the age difference in their relationships

Leonardo DiCaprio’s breakup

When news came out that Leonardo DiCaprio, 47, had broken up with girlfriend Camila Morrone, 25, the internet had a lot to say about the famous actor, who has been in some of Hollywood’s biggest movies over the past 30 years and has only dated women born after he started his career.

This year, “Titanic” turns 25. I think Leonardo DiCaprio will no longer want to be in it by then, as one Twitter user wrote. Things that are inevitable in life include demise, taxes, and Leonardo DiCaprio breaking up with his lover before she reaches adulthood. Those are the only three things that are certain in life,” someone joked.

The talk about Leonardo DiCaprio’s breakup is part of a larger trend of reexamining celebrity relationships with big age gaps. Demi Lovato and Taylor Swift have both used songs to call out their much older exes for dating them when they were in their late teens and early 20s. In turn, fans have used Leonardo DiCaprio, Lovato, and Swift’s relationships to point out gender and power differences in relationships.

Andrea McDonnell, an associate professor of communication at Providence College, says, “We’ve reached a turning point.” She points to the #MeToo movement, recent documentaries that show famous men’s bad behavior and abuse, and the overturning of Roe v. Wade as examples. “There’s a sense that the status quo isn’t working for women.”

Taylor Swift, Demi Lovato, and the long history of famous young women dating older men

Hollywood has a long history of famous couples with big age gaps, like Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart, who were 25 years apart, and Marilyn Monroe and Joe Dimaggio, who were 11 years older than her (12-year gap). Even more recently, Kylie Jenner and Tyga, who met when Jenner was 14 and Tyga was 21, and Florence Pugh and Zach Braff, who are 21 years apart, have raised eyebrows, as have a few of Scott Disick’s relationships.

Fans have always loved the idea of two co-stars falling in love on set, and McDonnell points out that it was and still is conventional to cast older males opposite younger women in romantic lead roles.

Elton John and David Furnish, Olivia Wilde and Harry Styles and Holland Taylor and Sarah Paulson are just a few examples of famous couples with significant age gaps. However, the age difference is usually brought up when an older man is with a younger woman.

Now, some people are calling out their old partners because they feel like they were used. Take Lovato’s song “29.” Many TikTok creators have used it to talk about their own past relationships.

“Finally 29, which is funny because that’s how old you were at the time. I thought it was just a teenage dream, but was it yours or mine? Said to be about the now 42-year-old Wilmer Valderrama, Lovato sings “17, 29” in “29.

In an interview with Ryan Seacrest in 2015, Lovato said that she and Valderrama first met when she was 17. At that time, Valderrama told her that she was too young for him. Seacrest told Lovato, who was 22 at the time, that she was still too young to date Valderrama, who was 35 at the time.

Taylor Swift, who is 32 years old, re-released her 2012 album “Red” last fall. In the breakup ballad “All Too Well,” which is supposedly about actor Jake Gyllenhaal, who is nine years older than her, she added references to the fact that he is nine years older than she is.

My jokes were never really funny, but the punchline went something like this: “I’ll get old, but your lovers will stay the same age.” To put it simply, Swift sings. She also talks about how her ex missed her 21st birthday party earlier in the song.

Swift dated musician John Mayer while she was 19 and he was 32 (“Don’t you think 19 is too young to be played by your dark, twisted games, when I loved you so?” she sings in 2010’s “Dear John”). In the wake of Swift’s re-recorded albums, both men have been called out on social media for dating younger women.
