The Giants got Darren Waller from the Raiders in a trade

Darren Waller Trade 2023: According to sources, the New York Giants have agreed to deal with the Las Vegas Raiders to acquire tight end, Darren Waller.

The Raiders have traded Darren Waller to the New York Giants

Darren Waller is a 2020 Pro Bowler who is going to provide quarterback Daniel Jones with an established seasoned target in the passing game. In exchange, the Giants will send the Raiders the 100th overall choice in the third round of the draught to acquire Waller from the Raiders.

Darren Waller had back-to-back seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards in 2019 and 2020; however, he has been troubled by several injuries over the previous two seasons and has only appeared in a total of 20 games over that amount of time. Waller remains in third place among NFL tight ends in terms of receptions (280) and receiving yards (3,394) since the beginning of 2019, behind only Travis Kelce and Mark Andrews.

The draught pick that will be going to Las Vegas was initially acquired by the Giants from the Chiefs in October of this past year. The transaction that sent receiver Kadarius Toney to Kansas City also involved the Giants’ acquisition of the Chiefs’ draught pick.

This trade, along with Kenny Golladay’s lackluster performance and Sterling Shepard’s knee injury that ended his season, left Jones with an inexperienced receiving corps for New York’s unexpected run in the postseason. This led to the widespread belief that Giants general manager Joe Schoen would glance for passing-game upgrades during this offseason.

Darius Slayton, Jones’ wide receiver, finished the previous season as Jones’ leading receiver with 724 yards receiving total. Nonetheless, Schoen came up with a creative solution to strengthen the receiving corps on Tuesday by executing a trade. This may have been necessary given the perception that the wide receivers available for free agency are not particularly strong.

Because of the agreement that Darren Waller signed with the Raiders in September, which was for three years and $51 million, the Giants will have Waller, who is currently 30 years old, under contract for the next four seasons. New York is anticipated to employ a significant number of two-tight-end formations with players like Waller and Daniel Bellinger, who were selected in the fourth round the previous year.

Darren Waller is likely no longer needed by Las Vegas after the Raiders reached an agreement with free agency receiver Jakobi Meyers on a three-year deal earlier on Tuesday. Meyers will be joining a receiving corps that already includes Davante Adams and Hunter Renfrow. Foster Moreau, the team’s backup tight end, did a good job filling in for Darren Waller during the 2017 season when he was called upon, but he is about to enter free agency, which means that Jesper Horsted and Cole Fotheringham are the only tight ends who are currently under contract for the Las Vegas team.

According to Schefter, the Raiders are also considering signing veteran free agent tight end Marcedes Lewis. Lewis is currently unemployed.

Before the trade deadline of the previous season, the Packers reportedly offered the Raiders a second-round pick in exchange for Waller. But, the Raiders now have 12 draught picks, including the third-round pick from the Giants, in a draught that is rich in potential for tight end positions.

Last year, the 6-foot-6-inch Darren Waller participated in only nine games but had 28 receptions for 388 yards and three touchdowns despite his limited playing time.

Kelsey Plum, a Las Vegas Aces guard, and Waller just got married lately. Mark Davis, who also owns the Raiders, is the owner of the Aces as well.
